Relaxing bicycle trip with baking
Scenic journey along the river Linth and past factories of the once booming textiles industry.
Glarus textiles industry
The relaxing bike trip from Linthal to Ziegelbrücke is very scenic and the route will take you past buildings and areas which were witness to the former flourishing textiles industry here as well as many other local pioneering achievements. Did you know, for example, that the iron was invented in Schwanden? And that the first labour law for the regulation of child labour was enforced in the canton of Glarus in 1846?
Make your own Glarus pastry
Make your own Glarus pastry (a local puff pastry speciality with plum jam or marzipan filling), visit a Glarus bakery and learn all about the history of this speciality. You will make the sweet surprise before lunch and can take it home with you afterwards − in a cardboard box on the back of your bike.
Cycling will make you hungry
You will enjoy lunch in a cosy forest inn − outdoors on benches, of course, weather permitting!
And another thing...
A remarkable pioneering spirit dominated this canton in the industrial era. People even talk of the "Glarner Wirtschaftswunder" (economic miracle of Glarus). The canton of Glarus had trade branches throughout the whole world thanks to its own ships and an extensive network. People even said that in every trading point in the world you could meet a Jew and a Glarner (citizen of Glarus).
