Pottery: Create a cup with a personal touch
Does everyone in the team have a cup in the cupboard? If not, this will change after this event.
Cups with a personal touch
A very versatile technique in pottery is the coil method which, as the name suggests, uses thin clay rolls. Firstly you shape thin rolls out of the clay which are then put together/on top of each other to form bowls, cups or other items. The base of the cup is cut out of a rolled out piece of clay and the thickness of the clay rolls depends on your own personal preference. Basically, though, thicker clay rolls are more suitable for larger items whereas thinner rolls look more decorative for smaller works. The thickness also determines the end weight.
You can decide whether you would like to pull the edge of the cup up more or if it should be more like a tea cup and broader and flatter. Once you have created your chosen shape, you can smooth the surface with a scraper and cut off the rippled edge so that the cup has a smooth edge.
As the items which are made using this technique are created from individual clay rolls being placed on one another, the end surface will also show these individual rolls – a design which may be kept. You can, however, also smooth the surface so that the clay roll structure is no longer visible and the smooth surface can then be designed with patterns and decorations. Our potter can advise you on this.
And another thing…
If the ladies have a little difficulty at the beginning because of longer finger nails we can assure you that you will get the necessary feel for it after only a short while. What’s more, any mistakes can also be easily corrected in the clay!
All materials (tools etc), workplaces, glaze (will be applied by the potter after the drying time), supervision by an experienced potter.
